A vision rooted in purpose

The story of Tonnellerie Miquel begins in 2008, marking the start of a new chapter in the life of its founder.

Drawing on a former life as a sommelier, Francis Miquel decided to trace the winemaking chain back to its source: wood. Going against the grain, he chose to apply the same sensory standards and technical precision of wine tasting to the craft of cooperage.

From this singular approach emerged

an independent, artisanal, and bold cooperage.

Since then, Tonnellerie Miquel has never stopped refining its profiles, perfecting its methods, and innovating without ever renouncing tradition.

A Journey in Motion

1992

A vision born from wine

After 15 years as a sommelier—including several years alongside André Daguin (two Michelin stars)—a new chapter began. Francis Miquel became a winemaking consultant, specializing in batch evaluation, blending, and defining cuvée profiles.

This first shift laid the groundwork for a precise, sensory, and rigorous approach.

2000

First steps into the world of coopering

The world of wood became the obvious next step. Francis joined an established cooperage to develop its skills.

Direct contact with barrels, toasting levels, and the grain of the wood stave sparked an intuition: to truly understand aging, you must think about the vessel, not just the contents.

2008 • 2010

Birth of  Tonnellerie Miquel
& the first range: Assemblage B

In 2008, Francis Miquel initiated a partnership with Groupe Barthe, which had just acquired Tonnellerie Garonnaise. The idea was to lay the foundations for a lasting collaboration and utilize their infrastructure to produce his own barrels.

In 2010, the first Miquel barrel was born: The Assemblage B.
A pioneering barrel designed like a technical recipe, harmonizing precise toasting, winemaking mastery, and woodworking expertise. An innovative approach shaped by time, water, and fire.

2012

The Selmer:
our future reference

Innovation continued with the launch of the Selmer barrel. Its goal: to structure without dominating, adding depth without altering the fruit. It quickly became our most acclaimed barrel.

Simultaneously, the cooperage began its international expansion, particularly in Spain.

2017

A symbolic milestone:
3,000 barrels delivered

The quality of our profiles and our close relationship with winemakers allowed the cooperage to cross a major threshold: 3,000 barrels delivered across France, Spain, and the United States.

A recognition of nearly 10 years of committed precise, artisanal work.

2021

Launch of
the special edition 569

The 569 was born from a desire for freedom. Inspired by Gypsy Jazz, this atypical barrel explores new aromatic balances. Conceived as a musical composition, it translates our desire to innovate differently, seeking harmony between fire, oak, and wine.

2024

The cooperage joins Groupe Barthe

Francis decided to take a step back, offering that Groupe Barthe acquire the brand and take over commercial management.

This transition marks a new stage: the visual identity has been reimagined, the ranges clarified, and the commercial dynamic has gained structure and coherence.

2025

A collective vision driven by high standards

Driven by a committed team and three solid barrel types (Série Miquel, La Selmer, and 569), the cooperage embarks on a new path. With a precise approach—like a well-mastered recipe—it focuses on technical innovation and trusted relationships.

The objective is clear: to grow internationally while strengthening its presence in France. A steady rise built methodically, in continuity with Miquel’s know-how.

Our Range

Serie Miquel

Balance, Versatility & Control

This barrel comes from a rigorous blend of oak selected primarily from the finest French forests. The wood is naturally air-dried for approximately 24 months, away from any pollution, to preserve its equilibrium.

Designed as a “companion barrel,” this foundational model aims for harmony between roundness, suppleness, and structure. It adapts to the wine without ever dominating it, highlighting it subtly.

LA SELMER

Tension, Freshness & Precision

La Selmer—composed mainly of French oak from the finest available terroirs and complemented by oak selected in the Black Forest (Germany, Switzerland, and Austria)—is inspired by both artisanal standards and the world of music.

It is a deliberate nod to the unique vibration of Selmer guitars. The long, slow toast (approx. 3 hours), called the Selmer Toast, is performed using dynamic water It imparts great freshness, marked tension, and precise structure to the wine, all while respecting the elegance of the fruit.

569

Natural Harmony & Freedom of Expression

Born from a holistic and committed approach, the 569 is the result of deep reflection on the relationship between oak, humanity, and wine. It embodies a search for accuracy, balance, and respect for living things.

The wood, dried for 24 months, follows a slow and sensitive process designed to adapt to the wine, not the other way around. This limited series favors intuitive winemaking, expressive terroirs, and sincere wines.

The name “569” quietly echoes a vintage Selmer guitar, a symbol of harmony and passion.
